Medical Missions

Someone Saved My Life

With her baby on her lap, Ven sits patiently in a crowd of people, waiting to see the physician. It’s another hot day in Cambodia, but Ven is used to that. What she’s not used to is having an opportunity to see a doctor.

You see, here in Cambodia the average person can only afford to visit a physician once every 3 years. That’s one of the reasons why the average life expectancy is only 49 years old. And since the genocide, there’s been an extreme shortage of medical professionals, and health care is almost nonexistent.

It’s finally Ven’s turn, and our team apologizes for her wait. “I didn’t mind waiting,” Ven says. “I’ve been waiting my baby’s whole life.”

Our Single Largest Medical Outreach
Ven is like so many in Cambodia who are desperate for medical care. And through the support of our friends and partners, we were able to meet the needs of so many in this nation through our largest single medical outreach to date.

Through our medical clinics during Hope Cambodia: 30 Days of Hope, we treated more than 9,000 patients at 16 different locations in 4 different provinces of Cambodia.

More than 80 doctors, nurses, dentists, EMT personnel and other medical professionals from South Carolina to South Africa came to give their time and talents.

And here at the clinics, most of the patients’ needs were able to be met all under one roof. After being examined and treated, they could also have lab work done and even pick up their prescriptions at our pharmacy—free of charge.

Best of all, after being treated, we gave each of them the opportunity to hear the Gospel message. And over the course of 30 days, more than 5,000 people made decisions to accept Jesus.

And although the clinic is over, we have plans for long-term health care in Cambodia and have already begun building a hospital, which will enable us to treat hundreds of patients on an ongoing basis.

Poisoned by Her Teeth
Half a world away, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, our partner support is allowing us to bring vital medical help to so many others in need. People like Judy Lear.

Judy lives with her husband and daughter and has suffered from various illnesses. Like many in her low-income community, she simply couldn’t afford to go to the doctor.

“I found out that I had stomach problems because I was getting poisoned by my teeth,” says Judy. “Every month I was getting sicker.”

In partnership with Healing Place Church, we recently purchased a state-of-the-art mobile dental truck. Along with a mobile medical unit, which we also help support, each month the dental truck visits several low-income areas. And after we meet their physical needs, we then ask every patient if they would like to talk or pray with someone. As a result, many have given their lives to Christ.

During one of these visits, our dentists extracted the teeth that were slowly killing Judy.

But Cambodia and Louisiana aren’t the only places we are bringing free medical help.
For instance:

  • In the remote village of Chandrakal, India, our hospital continues to treat hundreds of patients a week.
  • In South America, we sponsor a medical boat along the Amazon River, providing lifesaving medical and dental care to thousands.
  • In Swaziland, we partnered with Childen’s Cup to establish 9 Care Point Centers to give food and lifesaving medicine to more than 3,400 children a day.

From year to year, the Lord has continued to give us amazing new ways to reach our world through medical outreaches. In fact, in 2007 we launched a special medical missions division of Hand of Hope, dedicated to maintaining and advancing our medical efforts worldwide.

Right now, all around the world, there are thousands of people who know that someone has literally saved their life—physically and spiritually. And that someone is you. Thank you for helping us bring that healing touch to those who need it the very most.
