Special Outreach: Hope Cambodia

Hope Cambodia: 30 Days of Hope

It’s August 10, 2007, and young people are pouring into the Chenla Theater in Phnom Penh where Joyce will kick off her three-day crusade—one of the highlights of Hope Cambodia.

But just minutes before the event begins, local authorities cut the power to the building. Then, they lock the gates to the complex. But here in the heart of Cambodia, there was an amazing sense that something great was about to happen. And it did.

Inside the dark theater, Darlene Zschech and Delirious? led the crowd in worship for twenty minutes. Next, they came out of the theater and led worship on the concrete steps. The people joined in. And hundreds of others looking over the locked gates began to sing as well.

Meanwhile, Dave and Joyce were trying to get through the gates. When all efforts to open the gates failed, they simply climbed over the wall. And once on top of the stairs, with a bullhorn in hand, Joyce began to speak to the energetic crowd.

Eventually, the crowd began to sing “How Great Is Our God.” It was an unforgettable night.

What Cambodians Cherish About Joyce
That evening, we asked the people what they most appreciate about Joyce and her ministry. Time and again the answer was the same: “We love her bravery.”

For a country once ruled by fear and intimidation, choosing to share the Gospel in the face of governmental opposition was a brave choice—and the people cherished it.

“Even though the local officials thought they were shutting down the Gospel, it created quite a stir,” Joyce said.

This unforgettable night was just one part of Hope Cambodia: 30 Days of Hope— Joyce Meyer Ministries’ sweeping outreach to help heal and restore a nation devastated from the horrors of genocide. It took place from July 14-August 12, 2007.

Overcoming the Grip of Unimaginable Fear
From 1975 to 1978, more than 2 million Cambodian lives were taken at the hands of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. Their goal was to eliminate any threats to their regime by murdering all those who were educated—including lawyers, doctors, teachers, engineers and scientists, along with their extended families.

Today, thirty years later, this nation of 14 million people is still recovering from the grip of unimaginable fear. That’s why we partnered with more than fifteen churches and ministries to reach this country with the love and message of Jesus Christ.

Hope Cambodia Highlights
Here are just a few of the things that made this an historic event:

  • We held three-day festivals in the cities of Battambang, Kampong Thom and Kampong Chan, where more than 120,000 people came to worship and receive God’s Word.
  • We distributed more than 120,000 of Joyce’s books, printed in the Khmer language, free of charge.
  • Through our free medical and dental clinics, we treated more than 9,000 people. Find out more about this incredible outreach
  • We opened 15 new Hope Centers, which will feed, educate, and many times even house children at risk. Learn about these Hope Centers and our other children’s homes worldwide
  • Through John Maxwell’s Million Leaders Mandate program, we trained 700 people who will then go on to train a total of more than 6,000 other leaders…and we will return every six months to administer more training.
  • In partnership with Focus on the Family and Logosdor, we trained 1,500 children’s workers and provided them with the resources to help them teach the children of Cambodia.
  • We distributed gift bags—containing hygiene items and a Joyce Meyer book—to more than 10,000 prisoners in partnership with Prison Fellowship.

Through your support, we were able to help more than 160,000 people in a nation still hurting and still recovering from one of the worst atrocities in recent history.

This Is Impossible Without You
You made it possible for us to offer humanitarian relief to so many. You brought the Gospel message to tens of thousands desperately in need of healing. You played a vital part in changing these people’s lives forever, and this outreach will go far beyond these thirty days.

“It’s not just about one event,” says David Meyer, CEO of Hand of Hope, Joyce Meyer Ministries World Missions. “It’s about coming here and using this as a catalyst to help people for a long time to come. Our goal is to bring hope in as many ways as we can—not just for a week or for a month, but for a lifetime…and for eternity.”
